Covers hull geometry and hydrostatics, intact and damaged stability, resistance and propulsion, seakeeping, and the structural response of a hull to a seaway.

Submerged vehicles are treated alongside surface vessels rather than as an appendix. The stability problem differs fundamentally — a submerged body has no waterplane and therefore no metacentric restoring mechanism — and students who will work on autonomous vehicles need that distinction established early.

R/V *Cascadia Strait* serves as the worked example for the surface vessel material, including her actual stability booklet. Students calculate quantities they can then verify against the ship.
